AMOEBIASIS
Entamoeba histolytica

Amoebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica): This pathogen is a major cause of dysentery throughout the world. The organism has the potential to cause life-threatening abscesses in the liver and other organs. As with all the diseases under study in this project, new chemotherapeutics are needed to improve the current armamentarium and to address the rising problem of drug resistance. Due to the potential for introduction of this pathogen into the food or water supplies, it is listed as a Category B Biodefense agent..

At Risk Anyone worldwide
Humans Infected 50 million cases of invasive disease/year
