Toxoplasmosis
(Toxoplasma gondii):This zoonosis is spread to humans by ingestion of undercooked meat or
oocysts from cat feces. Exposure to this parasite is common, and can
lead to serious fetal abnormalities during pregnancy or fatal encephalitis
in immune compromised individuals. Treatment options are limited, and
need to be given lifelong in immune compromised persons. The potential
for introduction of this pathogen into the food supply has resulted
in its listing as a Biodefense agent. There is no vaccine for toxoplasmosis
